Fun Functional Fitness Formed in 2020 initially offering 1:1 and group-based fitness sessions. Philip Ankrah a Fitness & Nutritional Advisor working in the private mental health sector came with the initiative to give anyone suffering with mental health the opportunity to play a wide range of sports activities. With day-to-day experience working in mental health, I saw the benefits of taking service users from hospital wards to gain valuable time playing different sports with fully equipped sporting facilities. Running these sessions, I saw first-hand how the power of exercise/sports can improve your endorphins increasing feelings of pleasure and wellbeing.

Support through sports
Sessions are delivered in partnership with Cygnet Health Care providing experience with mental health care professionals. We deliver sessions from football, basketball, tennis, badminton etc to support the recovery of people living with mental health problems. This session has giving Service users the opportunity to look forward to having therapeutic activities sessions on a Monday morning at a sports centre after a long weekend of usually being on the hospital ward. The benefits of this group are that it gives service users something to look forward to most importantly helping them conduct themselves appropriately on the hospital wards which allows them to be granted leave to attend the group. Advantages gained by service users are improved fitness levels, social skills and different techniques when playing any sports during the session. By having this group offsite from the hospital is a big bonus as this helps and prepares the service users mixing with the public in the community. The group continues to grow with more service users enquiring and showing an interest in attending.
Outreach programme alongside with early year’s intervention service. (Founder) Richard Hay with over 20 years experience working in the mental health sector gives people from the community and in hospital who are experiencing mental health problems an opportunity to play football every week with training in tailored sessions and playing competitive games on the Hendon FC mental health team.
